Thanksgiving is rough for the T1. My strategy is to eat what makes me happy, keep the insulin close by, and check BG levels excessively. Sometimes this strategy results in decent BG levels despite terrible food choices. Since I don’t ever eat like this, I just try to relax and go with the flow on Thanksgiving day.
So, here’s how I did. I ended up taking 14 units of Novolog and eating a dizzying array of food that concluded with apple pie with vanilla ice cream. My BG levels went up to 130 and later as low as 67. I considered these numbers pretty successful for Turkey day.
